Remember how I was longing for the quiet of the winter months when I was knee-deep in canning jars and produce-laden wicker baskets? How I was looking forward to putting my feet up and reaping the literal fruits of our labours? Well, we are up to our eyeballs in snow and more is on it’s way. The desolate, cold, blustery winter months in Canada have descended upon us….and I couldn’t be happier. Winter may just be my new favourite season.
Turns out there is nothing better than sitting in a warm house on a cold day, eating fruit salad (from our copious amounts of fruit that we froze during the summer), and reading a seed catalog. Little gets me more excited this time of year than picking up my stack of reserved gardening, fermenting and harvesting books from the library. I may even be that crazy lady who goes for a walk on garbage day to search neighbour’s recycling bins for old milk jugs….because these jugs make the best mini-greenhouses in which to start veggie seedlings. Apparently, even in the depths of winter, my brain can’t stop thinking about plants, gardens, food, and produce.
It’s the classic “the-grass-is-always-greener-on-the-other-side-of-the-fence” scenario. In the summer, I can’t wait for it to be winter. In the winter, I can’t wait for it to be summer. But it’s ok. I’ve discovered that the winter months are for dreaming and anticipation. In my opinion, looking forward to something is almost the best part of anything. So, if that means the grass (or the garden) is greener on the other side of winter, then I’m going to keep on dreaming and planning. (And collecting milk jugs.)
