    Kombucha Brewing for Beginners

Kombucha is way cooler than it used to be. Trust me. I know. Kombucha and I have a complicated relationship that began tumultuously about 25 years ago. I am of firm belief that my Mum was one of the primary fore-bearers of the hipster movement. As children, my brother and I woke up each morning to a bowl of steaming oatmeal, chased down with a glass of prune juice. (To keep us regular.) Washed down by another glass of stinging nettle tea. (To cleanse our blood.) Ceremoniously followed by a large glass of homemade kombucha. (To fortify us with energy and vitamin B.) It was the liquid breakfast of champions.…

    Strawberry Chia Jam

Last summer I went on a strawberry-picking frenzy. Because we had committed to only eating local food for the next year, that meant that once strawberry season was over, it was OVER. No little plastic clamshell grocery-store strawberries. Not even one. And for those of you who call southwestern Ontario home, you know that strawberry season is a mere 2-4 week blip in the annual summer calendar. So, I did what any strawberry-loving, local-eating person would do – and spent almost $350 in picking fresh strawberries. Since then, I have realized that we could likely have spent maybe $200 on strawberries for the year instead. Three-fifty was a little generous…

    Homemade White Bread Recipe

Do you have a food that takes you back to your childhood with just a single whiff? Truth be told, I have many “whiffs” that transport me back in time, but probably the aroma of freshly baked bread is one of the most nostalgic for me. As a kid, my Mom highly encouraged my brother and me to join her in the kitchen. This meant that her kitchen was always slightly teetering on the edge of disaster, but was also one of the most magical places in the world. When I was little, being allowed to “punch down the bread dough” was pretty much the epitome of fun to be…

    Vegetarian Tempeh Chili

This time of year usually has me starting to crave fresh salads and anything bbq’d. However, April has been unusually cold in this corner of Ontario, meaning soup (and chili) season is still in full force. Additionally, trips to the grocery store are anything but pleasant due to COVID-19. So more often than not, I’m digging through my pantry and freezer to rustle up a meal from what we already have on hand. Consequently, the origins of this recipe are found upon chilly Canadian temperatures and the COVID crisis. For those of you who have been following along with our 100-Mile Food Journey, this recipe includes one of our new…

    Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe

Friday nights are sacred in our house. We very rarely make plans….and since we’re literally in lockdown (thank you, COVID-19), we really don’t make plans. As part of our family rhythm, every Friday is Feddema Family Fun Night (we don’t like alliteration at all…), where all four of us hunker down with homemade pizza and our favourite kid-friendly movie. Prior to our 100-Mile Local Food Journey, it wasn’t uncommon for us to order pizza in for movie night. Unfortunately, Domino’s Pizza doesn’t specialize in sourcing local ingredients. So homemade pizza was the answer to our predicament. Over the past number of months, I have had many Friday nights to perfect…
